Product images that convert: what works on Amazon and Bol.com?

There's a fundamental difference between product photography and marketplace product images. Photography aims to look beautiful. Marketplace images aim to sell.

Your main image has one job: get the click. In a grid of 20+ competing products, your hero shot needs to stand out through contrast, composition, and clarity. White background is required on Amazon, but how you use that space matters enormously.

The best-performing main images we've created share three traits: the product fills 80%+ of the frame, there's a clear sense of scale, and any key differentiator (weight, size, included accessories) is immediately visible.

Secondary images are where conversion happens. Image slot 2 should be your strongest infographic — the one that answers the #1 buyer question. For a dog food brand, that might be ingredient quality. For a trampoline, it's safety features.

Lifestyle images build emotional connection and help buyers visualise the product in their life. But generic stock-style lifestyle shots don't work. The scene needs to feel authentic and show the product being used in a realistic context.

Comparison charts are underrated. A well-designed 'why choose us' comparison against competitors (without naming them) can significantly reduce bounce rate and increase add-to-cart.

Size and dimension images reduce returns. If your product has multiple size variants, show clear visual comparisons. If it includes accessories, lay them all out in a flat-lay style with labels.

Finally: mobile first. Over 70% of marketplace traffic is mobile. Every image should be designed for a 375px-wide screen first, then scaled up for desktop.
